The DBT Centre of Vancouver is pleased to offer a full-day
workshop, “Strategies in Working with Suicidal Clients."
Date: Friday, March 15, 2013
Location: Italian Cultural Centre, 3075 Slocan St,
Vancouver.
About the Workshop:
Someone
around the globe commits suicide once every 40 seconds and suicide is the 2nd
leading cause of death for young people between 15 and 24 years of age.
Furthermore, the rate of suicide in most industrialized countries is increasing.
Regrettably, research indicates that most clinicians receive insufficient
training in working with suicidal clients.
This
workshop is designed to provide concrete and practical strategies for working
with suicidal clients. Special emphasis will be given to strategies used in
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).
At the end
of this session, participants should be able to:
- Identify common risk and preventative factors for suicide
- Understand, and more easily ask, important questions for assessing suicide risk
- Access some useful instruments for assessing such risk
- Perform a chain analysis to better determine the function of suicidal behaviour
- Utilize a problem-solving model in addressing suicidal triggers
- Identify 8 other important steps in managing suicidal behaviours
- Reduce liability through effective documentation
- Identify steps for helping oneself, and others, following a client's suicide
- Understand, superficially, some of the basic components of DBT
- Discuss ethical concerns in working with suicidal clients
The
workshop will involve didactic presentation, video and audiotape demonstration,
active participation, and practice of new strategies and skills. It is designed
for mental health professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors,
etc.) providing counselling or other psychological services.
Space is
limited, so early registration is strongly encouraged.
CE Credits:
The DBT Centre is approved by the Canadian Psychological
