Training: Reducing the Impact of Compassion Fatigue (Surrey) & Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy Level II - Fernie

Reducing the Impact of Compassion Fatigue

With
Robin Beardsley, MD, CCFP

Presented by Satir Institute of the Pacific

Date: May 31, June 1, 2014 from 9 am – 5 pm

Location: Phoenix Center, 13686-94A Avenue, Surrey, BC V3V 1N1

This workshop is intended to provide those in the helping profession with knowledge about the “Cost of Caring” or Compassion Fatigue (Figley 1982). Compassion Fatigue (CF) is characterized by a deep physical and emotional exhaustion and a pronounced change in the helper’s ability to feel empathy for clients, loved ones and co-workers. Many of us in the helping profession are much better at caring for others than we are for ourselves. While caring for the physical and emotional needs of our patients and clients is usually an immensely rewarding experience, this “Compassion Satisfaction” can be eroded by heavy case loads, dwindling resources, increasingly stressful work environments, negativity and cynicism from co-workers, and increasingly difficult stories.

During this workshop we will explore how CF integrates with Virginia Satir’s experience of a person, using the metaphor of the Iceberg. CF impacts every level of the Iceberg and is an occupational hazard for anyone who is in the caring professions.

Robin Beardsley MD, CCFP, has extensive training in the Satir Model and has been using the Satir Model in her community –based family and psychotherapy practice for over twenty years. She obtained her medical Degree from the University of Toronto and completed her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Beardsley is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the Canadian College of Family Physicians, The Satir Institute of the Pacific, the Banmen- Satir China Management Centre, and the General Practice Psychotherapy Association (GPPA) of Canada. She is a Faculty Member of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. She has had twenty years’ experience in a Ballint Group, which provides peer support for physicians regarding the doctor- patient relationship issues. She has taken and facilitated in level 1 and 2 training courses in the Satir Model, and has facilitated in numerous Family Reconstructions with the Ottawa Satir Learning Centre. She completed “Train the Trainer” in 2003, in British Columbia, not only in the Satir Model but also in 2012 for Compassion Fatigue with Compassion Fatigue Solutions, in Kingston, ON.
