Loss of BSW Degree program @ UBC Okanagan

I think I must be a bit behind here, but how will people in the Okanagan obtain the BSW degrees they require before they can apply for MSW studies?

UBCO to phase out Bachelor of Social Work program

11/23/2012

UBC Okanagan will phase out the Bachelor of Social Work program and instead focus on the Master of Social Work.

The universities Senate made the decision in an effort to meet the growing need for highly trained and specialized graduate-level social workers.

Edward Taylor, Director of the School of Social Work, says students currently enrolled in the BSW program will be able to complete their current studies.

"Our third year class that will finish their studies this spring will advance to the fourth year.  We will offer a full fourth year curriculum for those individuals.  We will simply not take in new admissions."

Taylor adds they will also work with students are in the program to help them advance.

"We are going to not only have our regular curriculum next year, but individuals who have fallen behind, we will work out a individual study plan and educational plan for them to be able to complete their degree."

The change emerged following wide consultation with social workers, employers and students.  It took about two years of research into this route before the UBCO Senate could make a decision.

A decision between the MSW and BSW programs had to be made as UBC's School of Social Work does not have the resources to support both.
