Fraser Valley Aboriginal
Children and Family Services Society (FVACFSS) is responsible for the provision
of a number of child protection and preventative programs and services to
aboriginal children, youth, parents, and families in First Nations communities
in the eastern Fraser Valley. The area has been divided into three regions: 1)
West: Langley/Abbotsford and surrounding areas; 2) North/East: Mission/Agassiz
and surrounding areas; 3) Central: Chilliwack and surrounding
areas.
POSITION
SUMMARY:
Social Workers provide culturally
appropriate and holistic services to aboriginal children in care within the
parameters provided by the B.C. Child, Family and Community Services Act,
the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators
(AOPSI) and the FVACFSS Policies and Procedures Manuals.
Working in collaboration with
Aboriginal Communities, community agencies, foster parents and support workers,
Social Workers provide delegated, culturally appropriate and holistic services
to children in the continuing custody of the Director within the parameters
provided by the BC Child, Family and Community Services Act and
AOPSI.
The views of children, families and
communities are sought, valued, respected and considered in all aspects of
service planning, service delivery and service evaluation. The Social Workers
receive administrative and professional support and supervision from their
Delegated Team Supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Social Work Degree, Child and Youth Care Degree or a Bachelor degree in a related Human Services field.
- a recognized diploma in the human services field, plus 4 years of experience in child and family services.
- Exceptions to the above criteria are based on the competence of the individual candidate and who are completing their Bachelor Degree.
- Preference may be given to candidates with experience in the human services field and/or aboriginal child welfare background
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be delegated or eligible for delegation in the province of British Columbia
- Knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures and history and how these affect the development of individuals, families and communities; and federal, provincial and aboriginal organizations mandated to provide child and family services.
- Understanding of aboriginal/non aboriginal cross-cultural issues as they affect children in care foster parents, biological parents and communities of origins.
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
- Demonstrated abilities and experience in: developing strong working relationships with children, families, Aboriginal communities, foster parents, biological parents, and other employees; developing contractual arrangements with clients, caregivers, and other professionals; balancing competing priorities; working under pressure; writing concise reports to various audiences; conducting investigations, completing assessments, developing work plans, implementing plans and evaluating intervention success.
- Professional commitment, flexibility and good problem and dispute resolution solving skills.
- Computer literacy on Database, Microsoft Word, Excel and other computer software.
- Valid BC Driver’s License with no restrictions; reliable transportation with adequate vehicle insurance.
